How Lau
Artist Statement
My work explores the invisible architecture of matter, emotion, and human experience.
Through abstraction, I investigate the forces that shape how we perceive, inhabit, and construct our realities. Color, texture, gesture, and structure become a visual language through which tension and harmony, order and disruption, memory and transformation coexist.
My practice is informed by a persistent observation of both natural and human made systems: how things connect, fracture, accumulate, and reorganize. Rather than depicting the world as it appears, I am interested in the structures beneath experience and in the moments when those structures begin to shift.
Each painting becomes a field of discovery, inviting the viewer to move between the physical and emotional, the familiar and unresolved, and to encounter the work through their own perception and lived experience.
Artist Biography
How Lau is a Venezuelan born, New York based contemporary abstract artist whose practice explores the invisible architecture of matter, emotion, and human experience. Born in Caracas and shaped by a multicultural heritage, Lau began painting at the age of seven under the guidance of Norman Salas, nephew of Venezuelan painter Tito Salas.
Trained as a civil engineer, Lau built a career spanning more than two decades across engineering, construction, innovation, manufacturing, and entrepreneurship. These experiences shaped a way of seeing grounded in structure, spatial relationships, systemic dynamics, and the forces that exist beneath visible form.
Lau approaches painting as both construction and discovery. Through the physicality of paint, color, gesture, accumulation, and compression, he builds compositions in which tension and balance, structure and intuition, construction and dissolution coexist. His paintings investigate how unseen forces leave traces on identity, emotion, memory, and the ways we inhabit the world.
For Lau, abstraction is not an escape from reality, but a means of examining and reconstructing it: physical, deliberate, and open to transformation.
